POLITICS AND THEATER: THE PROCESSES OF THE GROUPS “ESTANDARTE” AND “FACETAS, MUTRETAS E
OUTRAS HISTÓRIAS”
Political Theater, Ensemble Theater, Potiguar Theater, Partido dos Trabalhadores.
The object of investigation in this research is the theatrical production of two theater groups from the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte (RN), which present an evident political-party affiliation. The aim is to identify traces of political-party alignment in the theatrical productions of the groups “Estandarte” and “Facetas, Mutretas e Outras Histórias” through the lens of studies on the Political Theater genre. The groups were selected due to their longevity and ongoing production since their respective foundations, which carry direct or indirect ties to the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). The affiliation with the PT is the main motivation for this investigation, as I am both a committed member of the PT and an artist from the metropolitan region of Natal, seeking to reflect on how the selected groups’ productions politically impact communities in RN. Theoretically, the research draws on Piscator (1968), Brecht (1978), Guénoun (2003), and Boal (2019 and 1996) to support the discussion on the role of theater in politics and of politics in theater. Methodologically, it adopts Marques’ (2006) approach that the role of academic research is to make explicit the dialogical process between peers who, as subjects of the research, occupy speaking spaces in the debates we are part of. Therefore, group members are given voice through interviews and questionnaires, as well as through the analysis of internal documents such as statutes and regulations.
