SUMMARY:

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are highly prevalent
worldwide and can be associated with social determinants, representing

a public health problem. Among MSDs, the most common are work-
related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), which include all health

problems of the locomotor system. They are mainly triggered or
aggravated by the type of work or workplace conditions. Most recent
studies on WMSDs have focused mainly on specific analyses of
prevalence and incidence, and on specific groups of professions,
countries and continents. Other studies have focused the analysis on
interventions, however, these studies have targeted a specific diagnostic
group, such as interventions for low back pain, or have investigated
interventions in groups of professionals. However, reporting on
interventions for WMSDs is still fragmented. And there is a clear lack
of an overview of this evidence. The general objective of the first study
was to analyze the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal
disorders (WMSDs) and their association with individual and
contextual social determinants (SD) in the Brazilian population.

The objective of the second study is a systematic review to systematically
investigate interventions for WMSDs in various occupational groups
from a global perspective.
The first study is a cross-sectional quantitative approach, using
secondary data from the Brazilian National Health Survey, from
August 2013 to February 2014. The dependent variable included
WMSDs, and the independent variables were analyzed as individual
and contextual factors. WMSDs were more prevalent in women,
individuals aged between 43 and 59 years, those with chronic physical
or mental disorders, who reported frequent sleep disorders and who
performed integrative and complementary health practices, physical
exercise or sports, and intense physical activities or housework.
Regarding contextual factors, high social classes and the proportion of
individuals with formal employment were associated with a high
prevalence of WMSDs, while a high Gini index was associated with a
low prevalence. Thus, a high prevalence of WMSDs in the Brazilian
population was associated with individual and contextual factors, which
should be targeted by health professionals for promotion, prevention
and intervention actions at individual or collective care levels.

In the second study, to evaluate the effect of interventions on
work-related musculoskeletal disorders, a systematic review was
proposed, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for
Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Randomized clinical trials
(RCTs) that evaluated interventions for WMSDs will be included. The
study selection process will occur in two stages: In the first stage, two
blinded researchers will review all titles and abstracts. In the second
stage, the selected studies will be read in full to confirm eligibility. For
data extraction, two researchers will extract and record the data from
the studies. Finally, the quality of the studies will be verified and
important variables analyzed.
