SUMMARY:

The present study analyzes the 1979 International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, through the methodology of the life stories of four potiguares who were pioneers in the fight for women's rights: Celina Guimarães, Alzira Soriano, Nizia Floresta and Clara Camarão. For this, we bring the question: to what extent is the history of the Potiguar pioneer in the fight against gender discrimination reflected in the norms established by the International Women's Convention? The main objective of the research is to interpret the pioneering spirit of Rio Grande do Norte in the struggle for gender equality and its reflexes in the International Women's Convention. For theoretical basis, we dialogue with authors such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jorgelina Albano, Ruth Manus, Flávia Biroli, Judith Butler, Guacira Lopes Louro, Djamila Ribeiro, Márcia Tiburi, Valéria Veiga and others.
