SUMMARY:

Oxybenzone is one of the most used UV filters in the manufacture of personal care products,
such as sunscreens, as well as in the plastic, food and textile industries. This compound arrives in
aquatic environments, especially in reef environments, directly or indirectly, where it can undergo
bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes in aquatic biota. Studies have shown the
deleterious effects of exposure to oxybenzone on aquatic organisms, especially fish. However, few
studies focus their efforts on understanding how oxybenzone affects reef fish, especially the effects
on fish physiology, behavior and cognition. Therefore, the objective of this work is to investigate
the toxicological effects of oxybenzone ingestion in dusky damselfish Stegastes fuscus. The animals
will be exposed to oxybenzone orally, through the diet, and will be tested through a multilevel
approach, involving behavioral, cognitive and physiological responses. Dusky damselfish was
chosen as an experimental model because it is a reef species endemic to the Brazilian coast, with
great importance in reef dynamics.
