Most MDD studies refer to the adult population, the disease is a leading cause of death, usually by suicide, among adults in their 20s. The present study is dedicated to the psychophysiological evaluation of the effectiveness of a group psychotherapy for the treatment of major depression. Therefore, this is a clinical research oriented to the treatment of this psychopathology, where, after the diagnosis, performed by a psychologist and psychiatrist, has start the treatment by Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (CbT) of the group, which consists of 14 sessions during a interview of 4.5 months. Before the treatment, and every month of psychotherapy, the stimuli of the psychometric instruments, validated in Brazil, to measure mood, anxiety and self-esteem. In addition, salivary cortisol upon awakening will be investigated as a potential biomarker of both the diagnosis of MDD and the therapeutic follow-up. With regard to hormone collections, these occur in the week before and after treatment, in a laboratory at UFRN, where patients spend the night. Among the expected results are: (1) that CbT reduces the depressive and anxious symptoms and propicie increase in the self-esteem of the volunteers; and that (2), in the view of the hormone demonstrate changes in their levels, corroborating the potential of the same to be classified as biomarker of this psychopathology.
