SUMMARY:

This research intends to study the association between Arthur Schopenhauer and the materialist doctrine. The real severe critics that have been made by Schopenahuer directed to materialism and its supporters are what draws attention to this theme. The reason for the research started with an initial contact with Alfred Schmidt´s work titled Schopenhauer und materialismus, taken as the guide to the presentation of this research because of his arguments and relevance about the theme. The reading of Schmidt’s work takes into account the concept of matter, essential for this study, the relevance of Schopenhauer´s demarcation of Philosophy, and the understanding of the double points of view, by which he intends to consider universality.
