This dissertation aim to explain what means the State from the works of Marx and Engels. According to these authors, the institution has undergone several transformations since its creation, however, what all forms of State have in common is the aspect of instrument of opression of the ruling class. Just like the social classes, the State did not aways exist or exist forever, it is an institution thats corresponds to a certain degree of development of social producion capacity. The conflict between the productive forces and the way in which society organizes itself to produce and reproduce the means of life is reflected in class struggles and the creation and extinction of social institutions. In order to understand what the state means for the creators of scientific socialism, our research investigates the emergence of the institution, the relationship between state and ideology and the transition to the dictatorship of the proletariat and the end of the state from the assumptions of dialectical materialism.
