SUMMARY:

This study investigates the role of university libraries as spaces for resocialization through work, focusing of the Integrated Library System (SIB) of the State University of Paraiba (UEPB). The research explores the inclusion of individuals from the prison system – from open, semi-open and parole regimes – in the services provided by the institution’s libraries, within the scope of the Citizenship is Freedom Project. The work examines the perceptions of servers and managers about the presence of these inmates in the daily life of libraries, as well as the inmates themselves in these spaces, and discusses the relevance of this initiative in resocialization through academic and work life. Adopting na exploratory bibliographical approach, the research analyses the prison scenario in Paraíba, highlighting the social and educational impacts of the Project, while at the same time bringing a new look at the relationship between the social reintegration of inmates and the university environment – a counterpoint to the literature existing which traditionally addresses prison work in prison libraries. Thus, the study seeks to demonstrate how the academic environment can promote learning opportunities and rebuild professional and personal trajectories for these individuals.
