SUMMARY:

Databases are an important resource for the management of scientific information. In this context, the general objective of this research is to propose improvements to the Base de Dados Pesquisas Arquivísticas Brasileiras (PAB), aiming to enhance support for research activities and scientific production in the field. The specific objectives are: to elaborate a diagnosis of the current situation of the database; to identify models, requirements, and standards for digital scientific environments; and to apply the benchmarking technique to identify best practices in consolidated databases. The adopted methodological approach consists of an inductive, qualitative approach, utilizing the case study and comparative methods. Regarding the objectives, the research has an exploratory-descriptive character. The data collection technique includes bibliographic research (through books, journals, articles, and websites), in addition to semi-structured questionnaires, and the benchmarking technique for the analysis of online environments. The subjects of the research are the coordinators of the PAB and its nine collaborators. In the end, it is intended to elaborate a set of suggestions to improve the PAB, as well as develop a booklet containing methodological and strategic guidelines for the design, implementation, and maintenance of scientific databases.
