OPEN SCIENCE: APPLICATIONS AND PERCEPTIONS AMONG RESEARCH PROFESSORS AT THE UFRN TECHNOLOGY CENTER
Open Science; Open access; Scientific publishing; Teacher-researcher perceptions; Publishing practices.
The main objective of this study is to gain an in-depth understanding of how the perceptions of research professors at the Technology Center of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte influence their scientific publishing practices, especially with regard to the choice between publishing in open or restricted access. The research is based on the premise that Open Science represents a paradigmatic shift in the way scientific knowledge is produced, shared and disseminated. In this context, it is essential to investigate how researchers perceive and relate to this movement. Methodologically, the research adopts an inductive approach and uses the case study method, focusing on the UFRN Technology Center. The choice of this method allows for an in-depth and detailed analysis of the practices and perceptions of researchers in a specific context. A bibliometric analysis will be performed considering the scientific production of papers of a stratified random sample of researchers from the Technology Center to verify their scientific communication practices. Additionally, semi-structured questionnaires will be applied to 254 research professors from the 12 departments that make up the center, which offer 15 undergraduate courses and house 14 graduate programs. It is hoped that the results will reveal the main factors that influence the decisions of research professors in relation to publishing in open access, such as institutional incentives, academic recognition, concerns about intellectual property, among others. In addition, the study aims to identify possible gaps in knowledge about Open Science and map researchers' needs for wider adoption of these practices. The relevance of this work lies in its contribution to understanding the dynamics surrounding the adoption of Open Science in the context of a Brazilian public institution. By identifying the obstacles and motivations of researchers, the research could support the development of more effective institutional policies, promoting the dissemination of scientific knowledge in a broader and more democratic way.
