SUMMARY:

Furna Feia cave, northeastern Brazil, is in the National Park with the same name, which has an area of 8.494,00 hectares, exhibiting a great exposure of carbonate rocks. The studied outcrops display many karst features, such as dolines and caves. The Furna Feia gallery has a spongework pattern according to Palmer (1991) classification, and presents dome structures in the ceiling and walls, distributed along sub-vertical joints, bedding layers, and stratification surfaces. This study aims to investigate the macroporosity developed in this cave according to its morphology and the possible role played by structural elements. All these aforementioned data were correlated with the primary host rock characteristics. So, we identified three bed packages (BP) in the cave, two tidal bar calcitic facies separated by a lagoonal dolomitic facies. Matrix pores are intensified in BP-I at the base of cave walls. Horizontal dissolution is more intense in dolomitic BP-II in the middle portion of the cave. Pockets and cupolas occur along BP-II and BP-III, but the ceiling (BP-III) are bigger and more abundant. Most of these metric pores are elongated, and their more significant axes are orientated preferentially according to NW-SE direction, indicating a tectonic control (Poço Verde-Caraúbas fault system). Dolomitized layers provided conditions for fracturing, enlargement, and dissolution, forming pockets cupolas, wich coalesced and formed spongework pattern of the cave. This way, Furna Feia cave was formed in textural and structural control. The results presented here could be extrapolated and used as guidelines in carbonate reservoirs affected by the same processes.
