RESUMO:

The notion of risk is directly associated with the physical, psychological, and / or material integrity of an individual or a society. The circumstances of the risk are accentuated by the existence of the disordered society, which is reminiscent of unplanned urban growth and strongly related to poverty and environmental degradation. From this perspective, it can be said that in addition to natural risk, the poorest individuals are in a situation of social vulnerability due to their socioeconomic conditions and infrastructure of the places where they live. In this way, this research highlights the situation in which the Island of Maranhão is located, which has environmental risk points - many or all - located in areas that are not suitable for housing. These sites are located near river waterways and sliding areas, since most of them are public and free of charge to establish housing, which facilitates the taking of part of these lands for the construction of houses. Therefore, the objective of this research is to evaluate the socioenvironmental vulnerability present in the Island of Maranhão, considering the risk areas located on slopes and close to the water courses. In order to reach this objective, this research is based on the Geosystemic Theory, which considers the relationship between natural dynamics and anthropic activities, where natural events that cause disaster risks are highlighted and the use of these areas by the poorest population. Thus, from the preliminary results obtained, one can affirm that the Island of Maranhão has many areas of risk, mainly related to flooding, flooding and landslide. However, the highlight of this research is based on the last two, since they are the most recurrent ones, mainly in the capital, São Luís, events that undermine the good part of the Ludovic society. The situation of the other municipalities will be addressed in the next phase of this research, where they will be specialized their areas and types of risk, as well as the individuals exposed to them.
