ANALYSIS OF LAND USE AND LAND COVER IN THE ITANS IRRIGATION PERIMETER – RN
salinization; environmental degradation; management.
This study focuses on the Itans Irrigation Perimeter, located in the municipality of Caicó/RN, in the
Brazilian Semi-arid region, an area marked by environmental degradation and socioeconomic vulnerability. The research aims to analyze land use and land cover, identify areas affected by salinization,
and assess their impacts on local environmental and productive dynamics. The methodology combines
remote sensing, geoprocessing, and fieldwork, including georeferenced surveys, soil sample collection,
and interaction with the community. Expected results include the development of thematic maps
representing the spatial distribution of salinization, as well as qualitative and quantitative data that can
support sustainable management strategies. The relevance of the study lies in its potential to expand the
understanding of the causes and consequences of degradation in irrigated perimeters, providing support
for public policies, water resources management, and the strengthening of family farming. By integrating
science and community participation, the research seeks to foster more sustainable agricultural practices
and increase the socio-environmental resilience of the territory.
