SUMMARY:

In recent years, several studies have shown evidence of disturbance of ionospheric Total Electronic Content (TEC) due to synoptic scale meteorological systems originating in the troposphere. Among the main convective systems operating in Brazil are extratropical cyclones, disorders of intense vertical development that can cause this disturbance in the ionosphere. Since the ionosphere is the essential wave propagation medium for telecommunications in general, changes suffered by this region cause degradation and even loss of the transmitted signals, making it necessary to understand such variability. In order to identify the influence of extratropical cyclones on the total ionospheric electronic content, we present in this work the methodology to identify and quantify this effect through the TEC calculation, as well as its visualization through distribution maps of this variable in space and time. To this end, three extratropical cyclones of different intensities will be selected, which affected the South and Southeast regions of Brazil. The methodology consists of using an identification and tracking algorithm that captures the region of low atmospheric pressure characteristic of cyclones by means of the pressure gradient at mean sea level, also considering the Okubo Weiss parameter. Among the cyclones obtained by the algorithm, cyclones occurring in geomagnetically calm periods will be selected. Then, TEC data provided by GNSS receiving stations located in and around the cyclones will be analyzed. The TEC data resulting from each cyclone will be compared with the average of the calmest days, as well as with the behavior of the meteorological parameters prioritized in this study. Finally, the TEC variations of the three cyclones in question will be confronted with each other. Therefore, it is expected to observe anomalies in the TEC due to the effect of gravity waves generated by meteorological phenomena.
