SUMMARY:

Time delay is a common phenomenon in satellite attitude estimation and arises from slow sensor measurements, large computations in the controller, and communication problems between the controller and actuator. However, traditional methods for estimating the attitude, such as TRIAD, QUEST, and the Extended Kalman Filter, do not consider these delays. In this work, we propose a new method for estimating the satellite attitude in the presence of time delays and based on the Extremal Seeking (ES) technique. Preliminary results include a first approach that maximizes a quaternion-based cost function (but without time delays yet). Also, the proposed method is simple when compared to the Extended Kalman Filter.
