PLANTING THE FIELD AND KNOWLEDGE IN THE EMPLOYMENTS: Knowledge and Food Knowledge in Quilombo de Praia - North of Minas Gerais
Agrifood System; San Francisco River; North of Minas Gerais; Vazanteiros and Quilombolas
This doctoral research aims to understand the agro-food system in the Quilombo of Praia, located in the municipality of Matias Cardoso, in the northern region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It examines traditional practices and knowledge, focusing on the know-how, production, and management of food. This community embodies a rich socio-biodiversity and an ancestral bond with the land, the floodplains, and the São Francisco River—elements that shape their ways of life and sense of belonging to place. The Vazanteiros/Quilombolas practice floodplain farming along riverbanks and lagoons, and their use and management of different landscape environments are directly shaped by the dynamics and seasonal floods of the São Francisco River. Through practices such as the exchange of heirloom seeds and mutirão (collective labor), they strengthen community ties and reaffirm their ethno-territorial identity. The study demonstrates how these forms of knowledge constitute strategies for social reproduction and serve as mechanisms of “resistance” in the face of environmental conflicts, territorial pressures, and transformations in local food systems. Methodologically, the research is grounded in ethnographic analysis, combining thick description, life histories of community members, and the documentation of knowledge systems and practices. It highlights the interconnections between the uplands, floodplains, and the river, revealing a logic of social reproduction and lived identity within Vazanteiro and Quilombola communities.
