Don't wait until you need it to support it": medicinal marijuana use and cannabis associations in Rio Grande do Norte
access to rights; cannabis; medicinal use; cannabis association.
This research investigates strategies for legal access to medicinal cannabis in Rio Grande do Norte, focusing on the central role of cannabis associations. Through an ethnographic approach, combining participant observation and interviews, the study deepens the understanding of the social and legal dynamics surrounding the therapeutic use of the plant and contextualizes the debate on medicinal cannabis use in Brazil. It also analyzes how these collaborative networks shape a new legal framework, challenging prohibitionism and building narratives that legitimize its therapeutic use. Throughout the process, disputes, resources, and practices mobilized by users and their families to overcome legal barriers are unveiled. The development of "lay expertise" and the articulation of legal and social actions are highlighted as key strategies. Overall, the findings highlight the challenges encountered by individuals advocating for their right to health but also point to progress and emphasize the importance of associativism as a form of resistance. The study, in turn, contributes to the public debate on cannabis regulation, proposing reflections that may guide more inclusive and effective public policies.
