Intellectual; Manoel Dantas; sertão; school books. Rio Grande do Norte.
In this research, we analyzed the school books written by the intellectual Manoel Dantas that circulated in the state of Rio Grande do Norte between 1897 and 1924, during the First Republic, in which the intellectual contributed to the production of writings about education in Rio Grande do Norte. Our objective was to understand how the conception of the sertão was presented in these writings during this period, when transformations occurred in Rio Grande do Norte society and modern knowledge was added to the culture of the people of the sertão. To this end, we analyzed the works: O Rio Grande do Norte: ensaio chorográfico (1918) and Denominação dos municípios - Rio Grande do Norte (1922). In these records, the researcher-educator presents the different aspects that constituted Geography and History in Rio Grande do Norte. In addition to these books, other sources available in digital collections were also compared, such as the repository of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and the Hemeroteca Nacional Digital, where documents and texts published in periodicals of the time were located, such as: the newspaper O Povo, the Revista Pedagogium, the Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico (IHGRN), decrees, laws, messages from state governors and academic works. Thus, in this dissertation, methodologically, we start from a bibliographic review, carefully analyzing these various records, seeking to understand how the sertão of Seridó were constituted during the republican period through the thought of Manoel Dantas, who left important contributions to the education of the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
