SUMMARY:

The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the process of emancipation of Vila de Flores, located in the central mesoregion of Potiguar and microregion of Serra de Santana, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, from the status of city, between the years 1936 to 1943 - period in which the city changes its name. In this sense, we chose three important points for our investigation, namely: identifying the developments of political emancipation in the city's urban organization, analyzing the process of consolidation of the new political-legal status and examining the historical context that sheltered the city's toponymic change. , which was renamed Florânia (in 1943). To this end, we will analyze works by scholars such as: Manoel Dantas – Names of municipalities (1922), Municipalities of Rio Grande do Norte by Nestor dos Santos Lima (1942), Names of the land by Luiz da Câmara Cascudo (1968) History of Rio Grande do Norte, also by Cascudo (1984). In addition to these books, other sources will be compared, such as Decrees-Laws of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, texts in magazines from the Historical and Geographic Institute of RN, as well as academic works that are close to the theme, and we will also use the Municipal Code of Postures 1937, analyzing how the urban area was thought of with priority on organizing and cleaning streets and conserving/repairing the municipality's carriage roads, among others. In this research, we dialogue with the line of Research II of the Master's Program – Historiography and Representations of the Sertões, housing investigations that are aligned with the dimensions of Cultural History and Political History. The methodology applied will be speech analysis.
