SUMMARY:

This research project presents an investigation proposal in which we will seek to analyze the
political performance of magistrates in the sertões of the north-rio-grandense Seridó, having as
a guiding thread the trajectory of judge Manoel José Fernandes, who, for more than forty years
(1861 -1907), was inserted in the political life of Serido, as head of the Liberal Party, during
the monarchy, and, proclaimed the Republic, of the Republican Party. We will try to investigate
how this political action of magistrates in the sertões took place, based on hemerographic and
judicial sources, as well as the legislation on the Judiciary and on elections, in addition to the
reports of the presidents of provinces/states and the Minister of Justice. Dialoguing with
concepts of political history, elites and sociability networks, we will seek to understand the
dynamics of the occupation of magistrate positions and their use for political purposes,
analyzing how an idea of the sertão as a land without law, depopulated, uncivilized, influenced
the judges' choices to act in the hinterland districts. In this way, through a prosopographic study,
we will also try to confront the professional and political trajectory of these magistrates who
worked in the sertões with that of Dr. Manuel Jose Fernandes. Methodologically, we will start
from the bibliographic review, making use of the evidence paradigm, and adopting microhistory
and nominative linking as approaches in the management of sources.
