SUMMARY:

It problematizes representations of the northeastern sertão, the subjects from sertão and their cultural practices through the production of two artistic groups from Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The analysis covered a set of twelve (12) journals, where it was found representations of sertão in twenty (20) narratives. In this universe of analysis, ten (10) comics are present in seven (07) editions of the magazine Maturi, from the Comic Research Group (Grupehq), in Natal; and ten (10) comics are present in five (05) publications of the Pau a Pique Group of Comics (Grupphq), current Associação Avoante de Cultura (AAC) of the interior city of Currais Novos-RN: Stories of Cowboys, Chaos in the Tits, Kueka, Comics Avoante and Kan kão. It used the methodological approach of semiotic analysis, vignette by vignette, similar to that made by Umberto Eco, for the process of decoding graphic signs, as defined by Antônio Cagnin. To understand the northeastern sertão, especially in literary, artistic and cultural productions, including comics, from the last century, it was based on authors such as Janaina
Amado Erivaldo Neves, Durval Albuquerque Júnior, Tiago Bonato, Andrade Júnior, and, among others, Araújo Sá and Paulo Costa. With the analysis of this documentary set, it is expected to identify two forms of representation of the northeastern sertão, the subjects from sertão and their cultural practices. One from the coast, in which stereotypes appear around a space marked by drought, poverty and misery, or even by fragile and hungry cattle due to lack of pasture; another coming from the interior, where the subject from sertão is represented in a space where there is fun, humor, joy, as well as a social and economic perspective, even if it still follows stereotypes.
