SUMMARY:

The oral environment is a diverse microbiota coexisting in symbiosis. The imbalance of this ecosystem favors the emergence of biofilm-dependent diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to search for complementary natural alternatives that restore moderation. Objective: To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Nopalea cochenillifera (palm) on microorganisms resident in the mouth. Methodology: The bacteriostatic, bactericidal and antibiofilm action of the hydroethanolic extract of Nopalea cochenillifera cladodes on Streptococcus oralis (ATCC10557), S. salivarius oralis (ATCC 7073) and S. mutans (ATCC 700610) will be evaluated. Each assay will be performed in triplicate. The cultures will be standardized in tubes containing 5 mL of sterile 0.9% saline solution, and each microbial suspension will be adjusted in a spectrophotometer, at a wavelength of 625 nm, to the equivalent of 106 CFU/mL. Subsequently, the microbial inocula, the extract in different concentrations and Mueller Hinton broth enriched with 15% sucrose will be added to 96-well plates. The same procedures will be performed for the positive control, 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate. The plates will be incubated at 37 ± 1 ˚C for 24 hours and microbial and biofilm growth will be indicated by the addition of resazurin aqueous solution and through the Elisa reader, respectively.
