SUMMARY:

The chlorine pre-oxidation process is commonly used in water treatment plants to remove natural organic materials (NOM), among other contaminants. Nevertheless, when this NOM comes from humic and fulvic substances, there is the possibility of forming oxidation by-products (OBP), especially trihalomethanes (THM), with carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. In Brazil, mainly in the Northeast region, as well as in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, the main surface water sources used to supply the population are increasing eutrophication, a fact that aggravates OBP training potential. Among the technologies used to remove THM, the adsorption with powdered activated carbon (PAC) and granulated activated carbon (GAC) has been applied with notable satisfaction for the good results obtained and the non-generation by-products. The application of graphene oxide (GO) in water treatment for human supply, although still incipient, has been shown to be more effective in removing other pollutants, especially microcystins, drugs and THM, when compared to PAC and GAC. Therefore, this research aims to comparatively evaluate the adsorption mechanisms of THM with GO, PAC and GAC. The experimental work will consist of three phases and will be used the central composite design, as the response surface methodology: phase 01 - GO synthesis and chemical, structural and morphological characterization of the adsorbent materials (PAC, GAC and GO); phase 02 - batch adsorption tests, where the influence of the variation of different operational conditions will be evaluated to obtain kinetic data and adsorption isotherms; phase 03 - adsorption tests in a continuous system (in column), in this step the best operational condition resulting from phase 02 will be obtained. All tests will be performed with treated water from the Extremoz-RN-Brazil water treatment plant.
