SUMMARY:

Water is a limiting resource for economic development and population survival. When the supply of water is lower than the demand, a water imbalance can occur due to water scarcity, which directly implies the emergence of conflicts over its various uses. To minimize this problem, the construction of reservoirs to meet the demands is a recurrent solution in semiarid regions, which in Brazil are characterized by having great hydrological variability, both spatially and temporally. For a good management and maximization of the use of the reservoirs, operating rules can be applied, to optimize the service provided to users. To solve the optimization models, computational intelligence techniques are used to solve complex problems, among which is the genetic algorithm as an important tool in solving problems related to water resources management. The study area is located in the Brazilian semiarid region, in the Piancó-Piranhas-Açu river basin, in the Dourado and Marechal Dutra reservoirs. Thus, the objective of this work is to evaluate the performance gain in meeting water demands with the definition of operating rules in the reservoirs, operating in an isolated and integrated manner, using the genetic algorithm in the optimization through the simulation of the reservoir water balance. The evaluation was obtained through the performance indicators reliability, efficiency (volumetric reliability), resilience, vulnerability, and main water outputs from the reservoir (demand supply, spillage and evaporation). The results show that water infrastructure improves the performance of meeting demands, reducing the periods of failure, however the rationing rules were not able to obtain superior results, being similar to those obtained with the standard operation rule in isolation, and an increase in efficiency in integrated operation. Almost 50% of the water volume is lost through spillage or evaporation, therefore, it is desirable that future studies differentiate the dry and wet periods in defining the operating rules.
