RESUMO:

Water treatment plants (WTP) generate residuals which require efficient and effective management, in a way to provide proper destination and treatment that also fit the referred generation to the respective water supply technical regulation, getting solutions, which represent the least possible impact either for the environment or the human health. In this context, it’s possible to realize there is a lack of studies that might able to relate the generated residuals characteristics to the WTP operational parameters. One of the reasons for residuals characterization is based on sustainability, as soon as it might be found novel proposals for reuse of sustainable, technically and economically valuable components of the WTP residual stream. Besides, the achievement of data from two different types of WTP, one of them working at direct filtration in actual scale and the other operating in pilot-scale both downward direct filtration and upward-downward double filtration, generates solid possibilities of comparing efficiency data and characterization results from each type of system. In the actual scale WTP, a clarification/sedimentation lagoon treats the residuals generated during filter backwashing, from which the clarified filter backwash water returns to the WTP stream after pre-oxidation and coagulation. The process of clarification by sedimentation of FBW inside the lagoon generates on the other hand a significant part of solids that compose the WTP sludge. The characteristics of the generated sludge are directly related to WTP operational parameters, so that it is possible to obtain qualitative and quantitative correlation factors between the variables involved. The research aims to develop a qualitative-quantitative characterization of a direct and double filtration WTP residual streams in actual and pilot scales. Due to the tendency of presenting high concentration of coagulant residuals in the WTP sludge, the research also aims to evaluate the potential to retrieve aluminum from the sludge to work as a recovered coagulant at alternative processes.
