RESUMO:

In the last few years, the Brazilian Northeast has experienced the greatest historical drought ever recorded. In the semi-arid region the effects of this drought are more pronounced, due to several factors, such as the low rainfall regime and the rainfall irregularity, resulting in a low availability of good quality water and adequate quantity to meet basic human needs. In the context of scarcity, the search for alternative solutions that increase water availability, among which is the use of rainwater harvesting systems, becomes very important. In these systems, the cistern is usually the most expensive item, and its dimensioning must be done in a careful way to avoid unnecessary costs, as well as undersizing or oversizing. The literature presents a wide variety of methodologies for cisterns design, however, most of them do not consider the temporal variability of precipitation in their calculation processes. One of the methods that makes this consideration is the Andrade Neto Method, which uses as one of the sizing variables the critical precipitation. Thus, the objective of this research is to evaluate the behavior of cisterns sized by the Andrade Neto method in regions of different rainfall regimes in Rio Grande do Norte, as well as to develop an empirical equation for the design of cisterns, using as one of the independent variables the critical precipitation. The behavior of the cisterns will be evaluated for different scenarios through the use of efficiency, reliability, resilience and vulnerability indices; while the empirical equation for the sizing will be obtained from the use of multiple linear regression using the Stepwise method. Lastly, it is expected to obtain the water saving potential of cisterns sized by the Andrade Neto method, in addition to an empirical equation with the most relevant variables for the design of rainwater harvesting systems and to achieve the best cost-benefit in terms of efficiency.
