SUMMARY:

The high demand for sustainable energy alternatives drives the search for new technologies in
the production of biofuels. This study aims to develop and evaluate biocatalysts derived from
natural sources rich in calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ), such as oyster shells and eggshells, which
will be applied in the methyl transesterification reaction of coconut oil (Cocos nucifera L.) to
produce biodiesel. Initially, the residual materials will undergo a thermal synthesis step to be
transformed into calcium oxide (CaO). The material obtained from eggshells will
subsequently be chemically modified with zinc and potassium to enhance its catalytic
activity. All biocatalysts will be characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, XRF, and TG.
Following this step, the materials will be used in the transesterification reaction of coconut oil
to evaluate their respective catalytic potential in biodiesel yield. The raw vegetable oil will be
characterized by pH, acidity index, visual analysis, saponification index, ash content, free
fatty acid content, relative density, FTIR, and TGA/DTG. The obtained products will be
characterized by pH, acidity index, visual analysis, saponification index, ash content, free
fatty acid content, relative density, FTIR, TGA/DTG, and GC-FID. Commercial CaO will be
used as a reference for comparisons with the biocatalysts. To study the parameters
influencing the process, an experimental design will be developed. Additionally, a kinetic
model will be proposed to analyze the results.
