SUMMARY:

This thesis project proposes the development and characterization of sustainable filtration membranes produced from bacterial cellulose derived from kombucha, reinforced with commercial cellulose acetate, aiming to explore their potential in advanced and environmentally friendly applications. The research includes the extraction and modification of bacterial cellulose, its conversion into cellulose acetate, and the fabrication of membranes, followed by structural, thermal, chemical, morphological, mechanical, and performance analyses.

The techniques employed include DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) to determine thermal transitions and stability, DS (Degree of Substitution) to assess the level of cellulose acetylation, SEM-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) to examine morphology and elemental composition, FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) to identify functional groups, XRD (X-ray Diffraction) to investigate crystallinity, TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis) to study thermal degradation and material stability, porosimetry to determine pore size, distribution, and volume in the membranes, hydraulic permeability and solute rejection tests to assess surface pore size, mechanical tests to evaluate properties such as tensile strength and elasticity, and biodegradability tests to analyze material decomposition under controlled conditions.

The expected results aim to contribute to the advancement of sustainable materials in the field of filtration, aligning scientific innovation with environmentally responsible practices, with the potential to open pathways for new technological applications and reinforce the importance of interdisciplinary research in materials science and sustainability
