SUMMARY:

Parent training programs, particularly those focused on feedback targeting behaviors that promote positive parent–child interactions, contribute to linguistic enrichment in the home environment and, consequently, to the development of children with hearing loss. In this context, addressing the communicative needs of each family is essential, which requires precise assessment of the interaction. Thus, this work was divided into two studies: a scoping review that mapped and characterized the observational instruments available in the literature for assessing communicative interaction between parents/caregivers and children with hearing loss aged 0 to 6 years; and an intervention study aimed at describing the effects of parent training via televideofeedback on the outcomes of a child with hearing loss and her family. The scoping review was conducted in accordance with the JBI manual and reported following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Searches were performed in MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science, LILACS, Embase, and Scopus, as well as in the gray literature and reference lists, with additional consultation of experts. Studies were assessed by two independent reviewers, with disagreements resolved by consensus or a third reviewer. Data extraction included study identification, population characteristics, characterization of the instruments used, and the content, structure, and psychometric properties of these instruments. The intervention study consisted of a case report in which 20 tele-video feedback sessions were conducted with the parents of a child using a cochlear implant. To verify the effects of the intervention, clinical assessment protocols and neurophysiological measures of cortical activation in response to speech stimuli were applied using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) before and after the intervention. Analysis of the clinical protocols and neurophysiological measures indicated gains in the child’s auditory and language development, as well as improvements in parental interaction and family self-efficacy. It is concluded that the assessment of family–child interaction is central to optimizing interventions in hearing loss, highlighting the need to validate robust observational instruments in Brazilian Portuguese and to integrate them with clinical and objective measures. In the case study, the convergence of these assessments indicated positive effects of parent training, underscoring the need for future investigations with larger samples.
