SUMMARY:

Mental health has played a significant role in our perceptions over time. In Brazil, care for people with mental disorders was exclusionary, with assistance focused on the disease itself. Only from the 1980s onwards were support services created, initiating the transformation of mental health in the country. Due to the low level of literacy on this subject in society, this project aims to demystify prejudices in the population's perception through the dissemination of the history and memory of mental illness in Rio Grande do Norte, as well as to provide a democratic space for the dissemination of knowledge in the area of Public Health and the advancement of the SUS (Brazilian Unified Health System) and the anti-asylum movement at the national level. To this end, the objective was to build a digital technology through the analysis of histories and memories of mental health in Rio Grande do Norte, highlighting the changes in treatment and care provided through the transformation of the Colônia Hospital into the Dr. João Machado General Hospital. This is a qualitative research approach based on a framework that seeks to elucidate history and memory. The study was developed in two stages: the first consisted of document analysis, while the second involved the use of individual interviews using a semi-structured script with key informants to collect experiences and institutional transformations. Data analysis was performed using content analysis, in the thematic analysis modality, according to Minayo. Following this, based on the research, a Virtual Museum of the history of the João Machado Hospital was created, conceived as an interactive and accessible digital environment aimed at safeguarding and disseminating institutional memories, organized into two axes: a digital platform and an immersive 360º tour environment, both developed in layout version. The advances and setbacks faced by the institution are fundamental pieces for the consolidation and strengthening of mental health within the state. The accounts of the research participants indicated that intolerance, discrimination, and prejudice are still difficulties to be faced within health services. Therefore, the development of a technical and technological product is necessary to understand and overcome the asylum-based approach, promoting the dissemination of knowledge through a virtual environment and strengthening humanized mental health care.
