SUMMARY:

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a rare, progressive, and disabling neurodegenerative disease that poses significant challenges to the organization of health services, particularly within Brazil’s Public Health System. In Brazil, despite the existence of the National Policy for the Care of People with Rare Diseases, gaps remain in the articulation of the care network, timely access to diagnosis, and continuity of care. In the state of Rio Grande do Norte, although the State Registry of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis has been established, there is a recognized need to improve the organization of care and to structure clearer and more effective care pathways. This study aims to evaluate the organization of health care for people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis within the Public Health System of Rio Grande do Norte, proposing organizational strategies to overcome its weaknesses. This is a descriptive and exploratory study with a mixed-methods approach, developed in four stages: documentary analysis; interviews with key informants; an evaluability study; and the development of a care protocol. It is expected that the final product will contribute to the organization of care pathways, the qualification of multiprofessional care, and the strengthening of comprehensiveness and equity in care for people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis within the Public Health System of Rio Grande do Norte.
