SUMMARY:

Pain in the neonatal period, particularly in preterm newborns, needs to be well evaluated and correctly managed by health professionals in order to reduce these negative stimuli during their stay in the Neonatal Units, and consequently, improve neurological development. For this, it is essential to adopt and daily use scales that can measure pain in these newborns in order to guide professionals on the best care behaviors with a view to reducing and preventing pain in preterm infants. These professionals report having knowledge about specific pain scales for preterm infants, but they have difficulty in applying them in daily practice since it is not possible to carry out practical training beforehand. In order to use an educational technology that allows the professional/student to immerse themselves in simulated situations in a practical environment without direct contact with the patient, but applying everyday care situations, the use of the serious game or serious games in teaching the various areas of health. Objective: To implement a serious game on pain assessment and management in preterm newborns. Method: This will be a qualitative research in Action Research modality with data analysis approach following the precepts of content analysis in thematic analysis modality proposed by Bardin. The research will take place at the Maternidade Escola Januário Cicco in 2022, the study population will consist of neonatal intensive care nurses or general practitioners who have been working in the Neonatal Unit for at least 2 years. The study will be carried out in 4 phases: integrative literature review using databases (phase 1); construction of three scenarios involving pain assessment and management in preterm newborns (phase 2); evaluation of the scenarios by an online focus group composed of nurses working in the Neonatal Unit (phase 3); development of the serious game by professionals specializing in educational technologies (phase 4). The study will be conducted after consent of the Maternity and approval of the Research Ethics Committee of UFRN, requiring the participants to sign the Informed Consent Form, in accordance with the ethical precepts of Resolution No. 466 of 2012 of the National Health Council. Data collection will take place by conducting the focus group online through the Google Meet ® platform. Expected results: it is expected that the serious game resulting from this study can provide an interactive experience in the acquisition of knowledge about pain assessment and management in preterm newborns, from the perspective that nursing professionals provide care more safely , as well as the pain resulting from the procedures in the Newborn is minimized. Furthermore, the technological product will also serve as a teaching-learning instrument for undergraduate and graduate students in the field of nursing.
