SUMMARY:

This study adopts a phenomenological perspective in order to apprehend the relationship between children and protected natural environments present in cities, assuming that contact with nature offers potential and restorative benefits for human development, at the same time it restores people's awareness of the importance of preserving these natural areas. It is questioned how the relationship between children and nature takes place in a developing country, focusing especially on the daily experiences of children, considering the Brazilian urban context and the pandemic situation experienced worldwide. As a working hypothesis, it is argued that, although children who live in our cities in general have little direct and daily contact with nature, the place of residence and the social arrangement differentiate, enable and enhance this relationship. To investigate the interaction of children with these environments and the possible implications of social distancing measures in this relationship, the study has its theoretical-methodological basis in environmental psychology. Empirically, the city of Natal-RN was delimited as a universe of studies, based on the spatial profile of its Environmental Protection Zones (ZPAs), comprising the social profile of children living in the surroundings of these areas, characterized by different urban and socioeconomic configurations. The general objective of the empirical research is to understand how children who live around the Natal ZPAs signify and relate to these protected environments. Methodologically, the research is characterized as exploratory, takes an ethnographic stance. As contributions, it is understood that the understanding of the child-nature relationship in the Brazilian reality is essential to recognize the different environmental contexts and interactions, to think about the quality of life in childhood and the open spaces of our cities, in addition to being able to subsidize public policies aimed at for the promotion and preservation of this interaction. In this qualification exam 2 (pre-defense) the initial chapters, the method used in the empirical study and the partial results obtained are presented, leaving for the continuity of the work the deepening of the research questions, in addition to the discussion and reflections extended to the theoretical framework initially announced.
