SUMMARY:

The Chronicle is a short literary narrative, in the form of prose, and which was disseminated by the newspapers. One of the main characteristics of the chronicl is that they are light, without commitment and humorous texts about everyday situations, and in reason this, cities and society are elements constantly found in the narratives. The possibility of using chronicles and other literary genres as sources for urban historiography is presented by Urban Cultural History, and  when considering these records as urban representations, expands the possibilities of research sources, and consequently of interpretations of the city's past, because allows us to have contact with a more humanized story, told by common people from their experiences and sensitivities. This work aims to discuss the representations of the city and society of Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte, in the 20th century through the chronicles of Augusto Severo Neto and Newton Navarro, who were local authors who published their chronicles in newspapers, and in the chronicles they told their experiences in the city from the memories of their youth. The chronicles used in this work refer to Natal City in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s approximately, as the authors' past and present are mixed and the dates are not explicit in the narratives. The memoir chronicles are presented as a historical document of places in the city, which often no longer exist, or are abandoned, or are being used in other functions, so these records allow us to have contact with a city of the past, making this memory alive and preserved. This work has as main references Sandra Pesavento (2012) and her studies on cultural history, Antonio Candido (1970) presenting dialectical analysis as the best way to critically interpret a literary work in social studies, and Maurice Halbwachs (1990) for the discussion on individual, collective and historical memory.
