SUMMARY:

INTRODUCTION: Resistance training is part of the non-pharmacological treatment for patients with fibromyalgia. The major gap concerns the adequate and/or recommended amount of exercise, although some studies with different volumes of resistance exercises indicate improvements, we do not have a precise direction, in addition, we do not yet know if there is a preference on the part of some of these patients regarding different volumes of resistance exercise. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the preference of volume in three different resistance training protocols in women with fibromyalgia. Secondarily, to evaluate the patient's expectation, pain intensity, affect, subjective perception of effort, training volume and cadence. METHODS: Randomized crossover clinical trial, randomized and blinded. Thirty-eight women with fibromyalgia were included. All underwent three resistance exercise programs with different training volumes (one set, two sets and three sets in each exercise) for 3 weeks. Participants were assessed before the intervention (T0), before each training session (T1, T2 and T3), after each training session (T1, T2 and T3), 24h after each session (T1, T2 and T3) and one week after the last session (T4). As a primary outcome, patient preference regarding training volumes was assessed only at the end of the intervention, in week 4, by choosing one of the three exercise protocols performed. As secondary outcomes, patient expectation was assessed by a Likert scale; pain intensity by the Numerical Pain Scale; affect by the affective valence scale; subjective perception of effort by the Borg Scale; training volume by the 1RM Test and cadence by the movement execution time. RESULTS: Participants had a preference for the two- and three-set training protocols. There were no differences between expectation, pain intensity, affect, subjective perception of effort, training volume and cadence among the three different training protocols performed. CONCLUSION: Women with fibromyalgia preferred the protocol with two and three sets and none preferred the protocol with one set. There were no differences for any of the secondary outcomes evaluated for the three different training protocols performed, which reinforces that the choice for two and three sets can be taken into consideration even for patients with fibromyalgia who have never performed resistance exercise before.
