SUMMARY:

The increase in the life expectancy of the population is not synonymous with quality of life. Aging is a universal, progressive and multifactorial process, so that biological, psychological and social aspects contribute to its development. Active aging, through its determinants, seeks to make aging a positive, healthy and quality of life experience for the elderly. An important tool to understand active aging is the elderly's self-perception regarding their aging process. The objective of this research is to register and understand the perception of community-based elderly people about the active aging process, including considering the context of social isolation due to the pandemic of COVID-19. This is a quantitative and qualitative study. Participants, elderly community residents living in the city of Santa Cruz, Rio Grande do Norte, will participate in two individual interviews by phone call. In the first, the WHODAS 2.0 - Version 12 items instruments and the Personal and Social Questionnaire will be applied. In the second, the elderly will respond to an interview script composed of 12 questions about active aging and the impacts that social isolation has caused on the aging process. The analysis of quantitative data will be performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS); the qualitative analysis will be processed in the IRAMUTEQ Software (Interface of R pour les Analyzes Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires), version 0.7 alpha 2, in addition to Bardin's Content Analysis. It is expected to expand studies in relation to the elderly population and the active aging process, considering the current context of pandemic and social isolation, especially from the perspective of the elderly, and, thus, contribute to the self-perception of the elderly about their process aging, for the formulation of public policies and for the structuring of services aimed at this population.
