SUMMARY:

Postpartum care is a critical period for promoting maternal and child health, as it involves monitoring the woman and the newborn during a time of intense physical and emotional changes. In this context, this study analyzed the care provided to the mother–newborn dyad in Primary Health Care in a municipality in the Seridó region, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. This is a descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted in Family Health Units located in the urban area of the municipality. Intentional sampling was adopted, with the indication of one higher-level professional per team, totaling 20 participants (15 nurses and 5 physicians). Data were collected between February and April 2025 through semi-structured interviews developed based on the literature on postpartum care and maternal health public policies. The interviews were recorded, fully transcribed, and submitted to thematic content analysis proposed by Bardin, following the stages of pre-analysis, material exploration, and treatment of results. The analytical categories emerged inductively from the participants’ statements and were subsequently interpreted in light of the theoretical framework. The results were organized into four thematic categories: maternal and child health network, sociocultural determinants, public policies for postpartum care, and multiprofessional care within the Brazilian Unified Health System. The findings revealed weaknesses in the integration between levels of care, the influence of sociocultural factors on access to care, and gaps between normative guidelines and everyday practices. It is concluded that strengthening postpartum care in Primary Health Care requires greater coordination among professionals and services in order to ensure comprehensive, continuous, and humanized care.
