SUMMARY:

This study is situated within the field of Public Health and aims to understand the emotional, social, and institutional repercussions of the detention of adolescents serving socio-educational measures on the mental health of their mothers. It is based on the understanding that maternal suffering is socially produced and shaped by social determinants such as gender, race, class, and territory. This is a qualitative study conducted in a detention unit of the socio-educational system located in the Northeast region of Brazil, with the participation of ten mothers of adolescents deprived of liberty. Data collection took place through semi-structured interviews conducted in a private setting within the institution. The data were analyzed using content analysis, which enabled the construction of five analytical categories. The results show that detention intensifies feelings of guilt, sadness, fear, and helplessness. These feelings do not stem from individual failures in the exercise of motherhood but rather from processes of moral accountability and the judicialization of family life. The findings also reveal the central role of women in monitoring the socio-educational measure, highlighting the emotional and practical burden placed on mothers, as well as the frequent absence of the paternal figure. The narratives also indicate ambivalent experiences with the socio-educational institution, characterized simultaneously by everyday forms of support and by difficulties in accessing information and participating in formal processes. In addition, the fragility of the articulation between the social assistance and health care networks in the municipalities of origin is highlighted, marked by discontinuity in follow-up and insufficient psychosocial support. It is concluded that the suffering experienced by these women constitutes an ethical-political phenomenon produced by structural inequalities and the precariousness of public policies. This highlights the need to strengthen intersectoral coordination and to develop institutional strategies that recognize mothers as rights-bearing subjects and as protagonists in socio-educational processes.
