Analysis of Puerperal Care in Primary Health Care in a Municipality of the Seridó Region
Puerperium. Primary Health Care. Family Health Strategy. Maternal and Child Health.
Puerperal care constitutes a crucial moment for the promotion of maternal and child health, as it involves monitoring the woman and the newborn during a period of intense physical and emotional changes. Based on this perspective, the study analyzed care provided to the mother–newborn dyad in primary health care in a municipality of the Seridó region, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. This is a descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted in 20 Family Health Units, involving 19 healthcare professionals — 14 nurses and 5 physicians — interviewed between February and April 2025. Data were analyzed using Bardin’s content analysis technique. The results were organized into four thematic categories: maternal and child health network, sociocultural determinants, public policies for puerperal care, and multiprofessional care in the Brazilian Unified Health System. Fragilities were observed in the integration between levels of care, the influence of cultural factors, and divergences between normative guidelines and everyday practices. It is concluded that strengthening puerperal care requires coordination among professionals and services, ensuring comprehensiveness, humanization, and continuity of care.
