SUMMARY:

The literature on educational research considers that addressing aspects of the nature of chemistry in teaching can promote deeper student reflections on the nature of chemical explanations, the epistemological character of models, and how scientific laws are conceived and generated, thereby contributing to the teaching and learning process in the discipline. In this study, we present a didactic proposal involving the content of ideal gases that highlights the importance of discussing the nature of chemistry in Basic Education. Data collection took place within the context of a didactic sequence involving 28 first-year high school students from a private school in Natal, RN, Brazil. The sequence included activities such as text production, didactic experiments, and practical argumentation, aiming to enable the emergence and clarification of meanings related to epistemological reflections on both the specific chemical content and chemistry as a whole. For the analysis of the discursive interactions with participants, the Discursive Textual Analysis (DTA) technique was employed. As a partial result, the analysis of responses to the initial questionnaire revealed various student conceptions about the constitution and behavior of gases. The units of meaning were grouped into thematic categories that indicate diverse ways in which students interpreted gas-related phenomena, often based on everyday sensory experiences. These interpretations reveal different ways students construct meaning around chemical content, reinforcing the importance of didactic approaches that support the explicit expression of these meanings. As a perspective for the continuation of this research, future stages will investigate student interactions and productions during other phases of the didactic sequence, including: a structured experimental lesson based on the Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) strategy; an expository and dialogical lesson emphasizing the nature of chemistry; and a final activity involving the creation of infographics in which students were able to systematize emerging meanings. These stages will allow for a broader analysis of the conceptions mobilized throughout the pedagogical experience. Based on the results of the pedagogical intervention, the ultimate goal is to develop a didactic sequence as an Educational Product of this research, suggesting pedagogical possibilities that support the formation of a richer and more authentic image of chemistry in Basic Education.
