The manatee (Trichechus manatus) is one of the most endangered aquatic mammals in Brazil, exhibiting high rates of neonate strandings in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN). In view of the threats to the species, environmental education has proven to be an important conservation strategy. The objective of this study was to analyze environmental education actions aimed at the conservation of the West Indian manatee in the Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Estadual Ponta do Tubarão (RDSEPT), as well as to develop an illustrated children’s book based on the species’ morphological characteristics. In the first chapter, which addresses environmental education actions, activities carried out by Projeto Cetáceos da Costa Branca - Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (PCCB-UERN) between 2023 and 2024 in the RDSEPT were characterized. These activities also had their reach evaluated, considering the number of participants and the profile of the involved audience. A qualitative and quantitative analysis was employed to characterize the profile of the activities, institutions, and participants. Eight categories of environmental education activities were identified, with “playful and creative activities” and “workshops” standing out for their diversity. The category “visits” was the most frequently conducted. Different audiences participated in the actions, totaling 4,127 people reached and sensitized by the activities. The most expressive participation was from students affiliated with basic education institutions, followed by local residents. In the second chapter, regarding the production of the illustrated children’s book, the language and illustration style suitable for educational material aimed at children were defined. Subsequently, the content of the book was selected, structured, and written, emphasizing the morphology of the West Indian manatee. The created material falls into the category of an informative book, using realistic language and illustrations about the species. It is concluded, therefore, that environmental education actions involving diverse activities and effective participation of different audiences are effective strategies for knowledge dissemination about the species and promote the conservation of endangered species. Likewise, the production of the illustrated children’s book in this study contributes to the conservation of the manatee through the dissemination of accurate knowledge about the species.
