TITLE:

THEORIES OF ENCEPHALIZATION: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

KEY WORDS:

Human encephalization. Brain size. Brain growth. Human evolution.

PAGES: 103
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Morfologia
SUMMARY:

Encephalization favored the maintenance of the hominid species because it ischaracterized by a slow and gradual process that occurred with human evolution; providing the development of higher brain functions, including memory and cognition. Several theories have emerged over time, based on fossil and archaeological evidence, where the influence of environmental, climatic and behavioral factors on brain growth was observed. The hypotheses that attempt to explain human encephalization are of genetic origins, associated with anatomical and physiological variations, metabolic and climatic changes. Therefore, the objectives of the research were to identify relevant studies on human encephalization, relating it to human behavior, diet, social and environmental interactions, metabolic and climatic changes, physical activity and genetic factors. Methodology: This study was based on an integrative literature review, the main objective of which was to summarize the available research, searching the Scopus and PubMed research databases, inserted in the Rayyan online tool. The papers with at least one keyword in the title and/or abstract were selected, and then the readings were carried out to identify proximity to the theme and intended objectives. The results showed, after adopting inclusion/exclusion criteria and Boolean operators, a total of 102 publications, which were analyzed in full. Despite being theories, these studies are robust in the sense of showing very plausible evidence of all these factors and their influence on the encephalization process, making it necessary to identify the most relevant studies for understanding the increase in brain size and its possible causes. There is still no consensus on the origins of brain and skull expansion, although there are many welldesigned studies that address consistent theories, however, they need more research to be effectively proven.
