SUMMARY:

This dissertation research explores the use of harmonics as a facilitating resource for performance in the upper register of the flute, approaching the instrument as a harmonic series instrument. The study also includes the practical application of these concepts through an analysis of Fantasia Brilhante by François Borne, for flute accompanied by piano and/or orchestra, in which several passages are demonstrated where harmonics can be employed as practical solutions for executing fast and technically demanding passages written in the instrument’s upper register. The research examines how the conscious use of harmonics can expand the technical and expressive possibilities of flutists, enhancing aspects such as sound projection and the feasibility of performing passages in the flute’s upper register. The methodology includes practical analyses derived from reports collected through interviews and questionnaires involving flute teachers and students. Through experimentation and case studies – including the application of technical principles in the interpretation of Borne’s work – the dissertation investigates specific techniques for the production and control of harmonics, highlighting how these techniques positively influence performance in different musical contexts. The results demonstrate that incorporating harmonics not only facilitates technical execution – providing greater fluency, precision, and security in interpreting passages from Fantasia Brilhante de Carmen – but also constitutes a resource that can be broadly transferred to any work presenting similar technical-performance challenges in the flute’s upper register. In this sense, the conscious use of harmonics goes beyond the analyzed case study, establishing itself as an effective strategy for resolving fast and demanding passages, while also contributing to the improvement of sound projection and the expressive quality of the instrument across different repertoire contexts. The research concludes that mastery of harmonics is an essential tool for flutists seeking to refine their performance, suggesting its inclusion in advanced study programs.
