ROOTS AND HORIZONS: PROPOSAL FOR A MULTI-PURPOSE SPACE IN A HISTORIC FARM FOR WELCOME AND CULTURAL MANIFESTATIONS WITH EMPHASIS ON CONTEMPORARY INTERVENTION IN AN AREA OF HERITAGE INTEREST
Architectural Project; Multi-use Space; Intervention in Rural Heritage Area; Olho D’água Farm.
This Master’s degree final project consists of the elaboration of an architectural project for a mixed-use building intended as a cultural space and visitor center, with an emphasis on issues related to interventions in heritage areas. The site is located on the Olho D'agua Farm, in the Municipality of Sao Jose de Mipibu. In addition to its natural beauty, the location stands as an example of a Brazilian colonial farm, featuring a Main House, Sugar Mill, and Slave Quarters. This document includes a technical report and an architectural project. It was developed with the aim of evaluating interventionist approaches and the factors that can influence the design options of the proposal, considering the challenges of adapting such buildings to meet contemporary needs. The work seeks to understand if it is possible to enhance and preserve the intervention area through the insertion of a new building and how to explore the educational and communicative potential of architecture. To develop the architectural proposal, an initial in-depth theoretical and conceptual study on the topic was conducted through bibliographic research and studies of previous and related design references. Subsequently, an architectural program was developed, defining project goals and challenges. Based on this foundation, and with the support of course subjects, the design process was gradually developed and mapped through various forms of analog and digital documentation, covering the initial stages of studying constraints, concept formation, and development of the architectural design direction. With specific objectives in mind, the work studied architectural strategies to foster integration between the new building and the existing typologies and uses on-site, aiming to positively contribute to authenticity while adhering to contemporary interventionist approaches. Care was taken to avoid creating a false historical narrative and to develop a project with contemporary architecture that conceptually connects to the historic buildings without losing visual and symbolic unity. As a result of the studies (and simulations) conducted, the proposal reached was the juxtaposition of a new building with an organic and bold architectural design that combines functionality and aesthetics, accommodating the uses of a cultural space and visitor center. The aim was to create harmony between the new and the existing and to promote a connection between heritage and users. The design is envisioned with contemporary technologies, providing greater inclusion and comfort for users, visitors, and staff, and offering a significant social return for the local community.
