SUMMARY:

The transformations permeating the hypermodern communicational landscape, characterized by the mobilization of language practices that shift from print to digital, from static to dynamic, and from written to diverse multimodal forms, demand a reconfiguration of language education. Such changes call for a critical approach to meaning-making processes, with particular attention to emerging discursive genres, digital technologies, and multiliteracies as social practices. From this perspective, this research focuses on language teaching in a public school in Rio Grande do Norte, which offers an elective curricular component centered on an emerging discursive genre – the Pechakucha – for first-year high school students. The data generated within this elective curricular component constitute the corpus of this thesis, whose main objective is to investigate the potential of the pechakucha format for language teaching. To achieve this goal, two specific objectives were defined: i) to analyze the meanings conveyed in the students’ productions, and ii) to map the skills activated throughout the teaching process involving Pechakucha. The theoretical framework encompasses Literacy Studies – social literacies, sociocultural literacy, multiliteracies, and multimodal literacy; Discursive Genre Studies – social action and social representation; and Argumentation Studies – interactional and multimodal argumentation. Methodologically, this thesis is situated within the trans/inter/disciplinary field of Applied Linguistics and is characterized as a qualitative, interventionist study, incorporating elements of both action research and ethnographic approaches. As for the instruments used for data generation, field notes, audio and video recordings, and questionnaires were employed. From the generated data, two categories of analysis emerged: meanings (oral, written, and visual) and teaching processes (knowing, producing, analyzing, and disseminating). The results reveal that Pechakucha holds pedagogical potential for language teaching, standing out as a multimodal discursive genre that reflects the contemporary communicational landscape. Its dynamic composition integrates oral, written, and visual languages along with their design elements, and furthermore, draws upon both print and digital technologies for production. This tends to foster more meaningful reading and writing practices, promoting the construction of meaning in collaborative, creative, and critical ways. In this sense, by articulating different languages and technologies, Pechakucha enhances the development of communicative competence and the activation of various skills - such as knowing, producing, analyzing, and disseminating - as social language practices in contemporary contexts. It thus contributes effectively to a teaching process that is more responsive to the complex demands of modernity.
