Embodied Cognition as a Strategy for the Emergence and Quality of Mathematical Skills in Children
Mathematics; Mathematics Education in Brazil; Embodied Cognition.
Education plays a fundamental role in human life and can occur through different mechanisms, both formal and informal. According to the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base, the curriculum of Early Childhood Education is structured around five fields of experience, defined according to learning and development objectives. Examples include Body, gestures, and movements; Traces, sounds, colors, and shapes; and Spaces, time, quantities, relationships, and transformations. These fields of experience were significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to considerable consequences in the teaching of reading, writing, and mathematics for many children across the country, especially those enrolled in public schools. Regarding mathematics education, the application of embodied cognition, in which the body serves as a mediating tool for learning, can contribute as a strategy in the early years. Thus, this study aims to investigate the impact of strategies based on the use of fingers on the emergence and quality of basic numerical skills in children. To achieve this, three studies will be conducted: (1) Completion of the translation and adaptation process of the Fingers and Numbers Protocol; (2) Investigation of instruments for measuring mathematical skills in preschool children: a systematic review; and (3) Development of an assessment program for children's mathematical skills adapted for teachers. Through these studies, the goal is to obtain the finalized Brazilian version of the Fingers and Numbers Protocol, examine whether numerical task performance improves in association with numerical development levels through the use of embodied cognition (finger use), provide an assessment program for children’s mathematical skills adapted for teachers and classroom use, and offer insights that can contribute to improving mathematics education, particularly at the national level.
