SUMMARY:

The Palliative Care (PC) is an approach that seeks to improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing life-threatening illnesses by alleviating physical, psychosocial, and spiritual suffering. The increase in population aging and chronic diseases has led to a growing need for PC worldwide. Professionals working in palliative care contexts or in frequent contact with death and dying may experience feelings of helplessness and frustration, which can compromise their physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual well-being. Grief is a complex phenomenon, and its experience may be influenced by cultural and religious factors. Professional grief, experienced by healthcare providers who care for patients at the end of life, can result in accumulated stress if it is not adequately acknowledged and expressed. In PC, the physician–patient bond is encouraged and valued—and wherever such a bond exists, the possibility of bereavement also emerges. However, studies on the possibility and experience of physicians’ bereavement following the death of their patients remain scarce. This study aims to understand the processes of loss and grief in the lived experiences of palliative care physicians and their implications for the care of patients and their families within their professional context. It is a qualitative study, grounded in Gadamerian hermeneutics as a framework for both its theoretical foundation and the analysis of narratives. Participants were three palliative care physicians, and narrative interviews and affect diaries were employed to approach the experience under focus. Preliminary results indicate that professionals’ relationship with spirituality in their PC practices appears as an aspect of self-care, supporting the care of others.
