DICHOTOMUS KEY FOR CRABS OF THE GENUS Calinectes STIMPSON, 1860 (DECAPODA, PORTUNIDADE) FROM RIO GRANDE DO NORTE, PRODUCED
Crab, Sternites, Geometric morphometrics, Portunidae.
The genus Callinectes is one of the most exploited fisheries resources on the planet, along with other Brachyura species. It comprises fifteen species. Six species are recorded off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. The literature highlights the problems of high similarity, lack of updated identification keys, and the need for new approaches in the search for new characteristics to better distinguish them. This study presents the description of new characters and morphometric analysis. To this end, it was necessary to update the Portunideos key using tools such as geometric morphometrics. Specimens were collected on the northern and eastern coasts of the state. A specific quantitative pattern was defined for individuals of each of the six species. New, effective morphological characters were also defined for their distinction. The results presented serve to foster future studies of systematics, evolution, and ecology among species of the genus, for better differentiation and the development of more effective management for these species.
