RELATIONS TRENDS BETWEEN AVAILABILITY OF SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ACADEMIC PRODUCTIONS IN DEMOGRAPHY, IN BRAZIL, SINCE 1970
demography in Brazil; categories of data sources; themes of academic productions; meta-analysis; bibliometry
The objective of this study is to verify trends and possible relations between the availability of data and information sources and academic productions in demography in Brazil, in the last 50 years. It is assumed that the studies are influenced by the availability of data that provide information on stock and population flow. In Brazil, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) is the main producer of demographic data, working together with ministries, registry offices, health and education units, indicator compiling institutions and private companies denote the diversity of methodologies, types and thematic data on the national reality. The use of this data helps civil society, the scientific community and the public authorities to understand the phenomena of interest, in the search for answers, in decision-making and investments better directed to the problems that arise, with savings in invested resources and more significant results. . Therefore, in view of this diversity of national data, the need for continuous promotion of research and the dialectical relationship between study themes and empirical evidence, as guiding poles of academic and data production activities, the following methodology is proposed: the realization of a longitudinal, quali-quanti and descriptive study, with a review of the literature on the concept of data, data source, methodological aspects of data sources, the historicity of data production initiatives in the world and in Brazil and the historicity of teaching demography in Brazil; categorization of national data sources into census, sampling, administrative and unconventional, as well as a characterization of sources based on meta-analysis of data from IBGE and Ministries; survey of topics of interest to teachers and curricula of postgraduate institutions in demography; bibliometry of a sample of postgraduate academic productions in demography published since 1970, in search of terms present in the summary, keywords and methodology sections, which allow to identify the theme of these studies; classification of themes according to themes of the Brazilian Association of Population Studies (ABEP) and a residual group ‘‘ others ’’ for those that do not fit; relationship between the themes based on frequency counts resulting from the classifications of the themes of historical research. Based on the central hypothesis of this study, it is expected that: the data sources are strong influencing the thematic choices of demographic studies in Brazil; that the use of census sources has given way to administrative sources, sampling or unconventional, because the latter have greater territorial and temporal breakdown, satisfying the interests of studies that address more specific aspects of the problems; in general, there are more academic productions developed with themes related to health.
