SUMMARY:

Noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCDs) represent one of the greatest challenges to global public health, with cancer being one of the leading causes of death. In Brazil, breast cancer is the most frequent type among women, while cervical cancer, although preventable through vaccination, still has high incidence and mortality rates. Regular screening through mammography and Pap smear exams is essential for early detection of these diseases and increased survival rates. However, adherence to these exams varies significantly across different regions of the country, highlighting the need to deepen knowledge about the factors that influence this practice. The main objective of this study is to identify the factors associated with mammography and Pap smear screening in Brazil, considering regional inequalities. Using data from the 2019 National Health Survey, the robust variance Poisson Regression model will be employed to investigate the association between the performance of these exams and a comprehensive set of variables, including sociodemographic characteristics (age, education, income, race/color, household situation), lifestyle (smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity), health service use (health plan coverage, average medical consultation in the last 12 months), and health conditions (perception of health status and number of chronic diseases). The crude and adjusted prevalence ratios will be estimated, along with the respective 95% confidence intervals. The results of this study may support the formulation of more effective public policies to increase adherence to screening for these cancers throughout the country, especially in the most needy regions. In addition, this study may contribute to the reduction of health inequalities in Brazil, as access to health services is one of the main determinants of adherence to screening.
